As the field of tissue engineering continues to grow, the number of potential scaffolds, both natural and synthetic, also grows. Among the plethora of scaffolds available are synthetic extracellular matrices (ECMs), scaffolds that are generally a mixture of multiple components and are meant to mimic various functions of the natural ECM. These functions include both structural support and cellular signaling, thereby influencing cell shape, fate, and metabolism. For soft tissue applications, synthetic ECMs based on hydrogels have demonstrated particular utility. This presentation will highlight two types of hydrogels I have been working with in research and manufacturing – one based on a synthetic polymer, one based on a natural polymer. The use of stereolithography, a 3D layer-by-layer printing technique, to create complex hydrogel scaffolds and specifically using this to create multi-lumen nerve guidance conduits will be discussed. Applications of these hydrogels for drug toxicity testing in vitro, as well as products developed for veterinary use will also be discussed.
Dr. Brenda Mann is a Co-Founder and Vice President for Research & Development of SentrX Animal Care, as well as a Research Associate Professor in the Department of Bioengineering at the University of Utah. She has a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from Iowa State University and Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from Rice University. Dr. Mann received the Rice University Outstanding Woman Award in 1996, and the Young Investigator Award from the International Society for Applied Cardiovascular Biology in 2000. She was a founding faculty member of the Keck Graduate Institute of Applied Life Sciences, and continues to serve on its Advisory Council. Her research focuses on the development of synthetic extracellular matrices for wound healing and tissue engineering, and rapid prototyping techniques to create hydrogel scaffolds. She is also a registered patent agent.
