Numerical simulation and optimization of supersonic biplane airfoil using adjoint method

Numerical simulation results verified the good aerodynamic performance (very low wave drag) of Busemann type supersonic biplanes at design condition. But the performance of this biplane airfoil is poor at the off-design conditions. I used an adjoint based optimization technique to optimize the aerodynamic shape of the biplane in order to reduce the wave drag at a series of Mach numbers at both acceleration and deceleration conditions. The optimized biplane airfoils dramatically reduce the wave drag. In addition, by performing a Navier-Stokes solution for the optimized airfoil, it is verified that the optimized biplane improves the total drag, including the wave drag and the viscous drag.
By solving the off-design problem we proved the feasibility of the supersonic biplane designs. We also proved the adjoint method is a very useful design tool for supersonic flows involving shockwave interaction. Three dimensional design and viscous design including the shock/boundary layer interaction should be further studied and addressed.
